Among my more memorable freelance assignments was covering the 2012 Opening Day at Busch Stadium, a 2,500-word “behind-the-scenes” article in the May issue of Gameday Magazine on what has happening on the field, in the clubhouse and in the owners’ boxes. I had to pretend as if hanging out with Whitey Herzog, Lou Brock, Ozzie Smith, Bruce Sutter and Bob Gibson was something I did every day. An unforgettable assignment. The story also included a sidebar on the ring ceremony the next day.
I
also did a story on the 10th anniversary of the week that saw the deaths of Jack Buck and Darryl Kile for the June 2012 issue, and a story in which my family and I sat in nine different sections of the ballpark for each inning.
