Freelance Work

TypewriterAmong my  more memorable freelance assignments was covering the 2012 Opening Day at Busch Stadium, a 2,500-word “behind-the-scenes” article in the May issue of Gameday Magazine on what has happening on the field, in the clubhouse and in the owners’ boxes. I had to pretend as if hanging out with Whitey Herzog, Lou Brock, Ozzie Smith, Bruce Sutter and Bob Gibson was something I did every day. An unforgettable assignment. The story also included a sidebar on the ring ceremony the next day.

IGameday Magazine also did a story on the 10th anniversary of the week that saw the deaths of Jack Buck and Darryl Kile for the June 2012 issue, and a story in which my family and I sat in nine different sections of the ballpark for each inning.

Links to a sampling of stories written for other clients:

South County Times, Oct. 28, 2011: From the World Series to Crestwood. A former Major Leaguer talks baseball and what it was like to pitch in the World Series.

St. Louis Magazine, April 2008: Because We Know How To Get the Blood Pumping. The ten most dramatic moments in Cardinal history — that is, before David Freese stepped up to the plate in Game 6 of the 2011 World Series. They weren’t all good, and a few were heartbreaking — thankyouverymuch, Mr. Denkinger.

St. Louis Magazine, April 2006: Werewolves in Suburbia. Before Twilight and True Blood, there was St. Louis author Laurell Hamilton writing Anita Blake, vampire hunter.

St. Louis Magazine, April 2007: Constant Exposure. A story about the family who photographed St. Louis in the 20th century and beyond.

St. Louis Magazine, May 2007: The Spirit of St. Louis. How Charles Lindbergh continued to captivate the city 80 years after his famous flight.

St. Louis Magazine, August 2005: Top 20 Moments at Busch Stadium. Published right before the wrecking ball tore down the Busch Stadium we knew and loved. Pretty good story, if you can get past the typo in the headline I did not write.

St. Louis Magazine, June 2005, Make a Splash. A look at St. Louis area aquatic centers, from the Lodge at Des Peres to Raging Rivers in Grafton and a few more in-between.

Sports Q&As with the likes of the Rams Steven Jackson, the Cardinals David Eckstein, and Olympic soccer player Lori Chalupny. A list of St. Louis Magazine stories and Q&As is available here.
